    • expert advice

"The style of sleep adopted by newborns (and therefore their parents) is called polyphasic sleep. Early humans slept in several shorter segments too, to avoid predators and aid safety."

      geek mode

New parents often adopt a form of polyphasic sleep out of necessity, as newborn sleep schedules disrupt monophasic sleep patterns. It is therefore very common for new parents to have poor sleep, not only because of limited sleep hours but also because sleep quality can be reduced due to frequent waking. Our tips:

      - Be aware of your child's sleep pattern and what soothes them. Consider sleep training as soon as possible to develop pre-bed routines and sleep habits.
      - Take naps as often as you can whilst your child sleeps. Even a few minutes of extra sleep time can increase alertness and reduce the negative impact of sleep deprivation.
      - Where possible share the load with partners or family members. To counteract sleep deprivation it's better to swap night shifts as opposed to splitting the night between two.
      - Keep regular bedtime and routine for both you and your baby.
      - Regulate the sleep environment, ensuring temperature and light levels are low.
