When participants were exposed to stressful tasks or angry faces, smelling Ylang Ylang helped calm their brain's stress response. It was particularly effective in reducing activity in the insula, a part of the brain that gets activated when something grabs your attention or feels emotionally intense, suggesting that Ylang Ylang might help to reduce stress and emotional reactions.
Pilot Study 2019
