Did you know that your skin cells have their own autonomous bodyclock?
This clock controls cell regeneration and growth as well as managing how our skin ages. During the night, this clock is set to ‘repair and renew’ mode when stem cells begin to replace old cells with new fully functioning ones. Your skin’s water content has a daily rhythm as well, with water loss peaking overnight due to the skin barrier being more permeable. This does mean that skin sensitivity at its highest nocturnally but on the flipside it is also the best time to apply topical skincare as it is better absorbed through the skin barrier. Both internal and external factors – think temperature, blue light, pollution and stress – can disrupt the skin’s bodyclock, impacting the way skin behaves and its overall health.

Your sleep and digestion are inextricably linked. Just like the skin cells, micro fauna of gut has its own circadian rhythm too. The microbes in the gut function best when they are in sync with the body but their natural rhythm can be disrupted whenever your wake up is disturbed or stressful or if you travel through time zones (hence so many jetlagged travellers are prone to stomach upsets). In the early morning hours before waking up, the sugar concentration in your blood increases – a phenomenon called the “down effect” – meaning that there is no need to eat the instant that you wake.

During the Night Phase... Your skin moves into repair mode. Anti-inflammatory and anti-stress hormones are released. The skin’s dehydration level peaks thanks to trans-epidermal water loss (water loss through the skin). Melatonin, the sleep hormone and growth hormone production is at its highest and stem cell reproduction occurs. Beautiful skin starts with a good night’s sleep.

During the Wake-up Phase... On waking your skin is at its most dehydrated due to overnight water loss so be warned, it’s likely your skin barrier function could be impaired. DNA repair is less active and skin is susceptible to damage from UV. Tired Skin needs energising.
