SOS: SAVE OUR SKIN

Summer weather and holiday plans involve the prospect of exposing much more of our bodies than usual. It’s not only about baring our legs for the first time since the winter, sleeveless, strapless and low-necked dresses reveal arms and shoulders too. At This Works we’re a great fan of oils- and that’s even when it’s hot and even for those with oily skins. Why? Because oil not only absorbs and moisturises faster than any cream or butter, it can regulate the sebum production in oily skin and regular use can lead to a more even and balanced skin. The right oils regenerate the skin too.
The secret? If the oil is good quality, you only need a little. With base oils like Evening Primrose, Vitamin E and Pomegranate and fragrant essential oils like Rose, Frankincense and Rose hip oil (which naturally has both vitamin C and Hyaloronic acid) just to mention a few, you’re getting such a cocktail of vitamins, fatty acids and anti-oxidants – you’ll see your skin looking plump and moisturised and staying that way.
Skin Dry Leg Oil was the first This Works product ever and it was developed for just this time of year. I used to take a home-made bottle of it whenever I went on holiday to the sun even though I could have taken any other moisturising lotion out of the Vogue Beauty cupboard.
Whether I sunbathed or not, I would come back with skin dried out by the whole experience of dehydrating plane journeys, sea salt, wind, chlorine from pools and extra exposure to the elements.
The secret of Skin Dry Leg Oil is its superior base oils like olive, coconut, macadamia and evening primrose oil absorbs into your skin far faster than any cream or lotion and these bases offer natural anti-oxidants at high levels. Mineral oils will just sit on top of your skin and get on your clothes too. (Fine to keep out wind- but not OK if you want nourishment.)
Evening Primrose and Borage are rich in Essential Fatty Acids so a blend of these is like a cocktail of goodness. And it smells good. I find if I use it continually, it stops my skin from peeling and changes the texture. So that’s why I’m hooked.
Perfect Cleavage became a vital addition to the range because I sat around on holidays thinking about what else we all might need. The cleavage is one area that women forget about and damage so easily. Such a pity if you want to wear a strapless or plunge- necked dress to have a crêpey, freckled cleavage on display.
New ingredients on the market were the key to this formula. Larch extract was a must because there are clinical trials to prove that it really does tighten and firm. Then we added ingredients to give a natural sheen (not a chemical one like so many products) and oils that would repair and calm like universally beneficial rose.
The story of Stretch Mark Oil came about through our customers.
They kept asking for a safe oil to use in pregnancy. Many women are worried about the effects of aromatherapy oils in pregnancy, especially in today’s hyper- neurotic climate where scare stories are the norm.
I had aromatherapy massage right through my pregnancy and was hugely grateful for it. So- I know that the right choice of oils can be beneficial not dangerous and I have no stretch marks either. But this oil is not just for pregnancy.
It’s great to tone up the skin post-diet and you can use it for poor circulation, and to counteract the appearance of stretch marks on the skin due to weight loss or weight gain or simply because you’re genetically pre-disposed to them.
I also use it because I just love the smell which is light and summery and has that delicious top note of Neroli and sweet orange.
Rose Hip Seed oil is well known for its skin healing properties but we added some rather more unusual essential oils too. Gold of Pleasure, a moisturising emollient which is packed with anti-oxidants and Passion Fruit Seed Oil which is high in linoleic acid which we know to be one of the essential fatty acids (EFA’s) that encourages wound healing and healthy skin.
Coconut has been long considered in Sri Lanka to help prevent stretch marks and anti- inflammatory Camomile are just two more of the ingredients that enrich this formula.
Active Serum
Quality not quantity was the initial idea behind our skin care duo of Active Serum and Active Oil.
Most people are too busy to worry about a long and complicated skincare routine with a dozen different products. From my experience as a Beauty Editor, trying everything from high-tech scientific ranges to the most basic organic ones, I wanted to incorporate the natural ingredients that I felt really performed. But keep the routine simple. A serum to add vitamins and active ingredients that really do something and a soothing, moisturising oil to penetrate the skin quickly and deeply without being greasy.
First for the serum I wanted Vitamin C because at a certain percentage you can really feel and see an instant brightening result. I’m also a fan of seaweed and algae of various kinds both as food supplements and in face packs, creams and de-toxifying baths, I wanted some sort of presence for its tightening and toning effects and we chose both a Yellow Green Algae and added hydrating and sweetly scented Guava among other goodies, to boost and energise. You can actually feel the serum tightening and for some skins slightly tingling with the Vitamin C boosting the circulation.
You should always use a moisturiser after a serum and This Works Active Oil
(just a few drops of it) drives the serum into the skin afterwards, leaving the skin soft and dewy.
That’s all. Same procedure night and morning. It works for me.
